Guide

Scoring and ranks

Points depend on one thing only: the length of the word. Which letters you use makes no difference. A word built from common letters scores the same as a word of the same length full of rare ones.

The scoring table

Word lengthPointsCompared with a 3-letter word
3 letters1001 times
4 letters4004 times
5 letters8008 times
6 letters1,40014 times
7 letters1,80018 times
8 letters2,20022 times
9 letters2,60026 times
10 letters3,00030 times

Past eight letters, each extra letter adds 400 points.

What the table means in a real round

Three example rounds

What the player foundScore
20 three-letter words2,000
8 three-letter, 6 four-letter and 2 five-letter words4,800
6 three-letter, 8 four-letter, 4 five-letter and 2 six-letter words9,800

All three players found about twenty words. The third player scored 4.9 times as much as the first.

The Hunter Rating

Your Hunter Rating is the average score of your most recent 15 classic games. It appears after your 5 placement games. Because it is an average of real scores, it means something concrete: a rating of 6,000 says that you usually score about 6,000 points in 80 seconds.

The seven tiers

TierHunter RatingWhat a round at this level usually looks like
Bronze0 to 2,499Learning to see three-letter and four-letter words quickly.
Silver2,500 to 4,999A steady flow of four-letter words and the habit of adding S.
Gold5,000 to 8,499Several five-letter words every round.
Platinum8,500 to 12,999Six-letter words on most boards, found fast.
Diamond13,000 to 18,999Reading the long words first and sweeping the short ones after.
Master19,000 to 27,999Seven and eight letters, round after round.
Legend28,000 and upThe top of the ladder.

Every tier below Legend is split into three divisions, III, II and I, each one third of the tier's range. Division III is the entry and division I is the top. Legend has no divisions.

Why scores can be trusted

When a round ends, your device sends the list of words you found and when you found them. The server replays each word against the actual board, checks it against the dictionary, and adds the score up from zero. A device cannot report a score, only words, so a made-up score has no way into the leaderboard.
